### IOG (formely IOHK), the company behind the development of Cardano has released a toolkit to enable developers to create sidechains that run on Cardano. 

 IOG is seeking to make Cardano more "extensible" (extendible) and scalable by giving other developers the tools to make sidechains for Cardano. As a proof-of-concept, a team organized by IOG already put together an EVM compatible side-chain public testnet. One notable thing about Cardano is that is has never had any downtime. The security and dependability of the chain has been heavily invested into. In fact, development of Cardano has often been criticized as being 'slow'. 

The trade-off is that Cardano is unmatched in reliability. By allowing the development of side-chains, other projects can now leverage the well-known reliability of Cardano.

According to IOG, the toolkit is made up of: 

1. Main chain Plutus scripts. These scripts run on Cardano’s main chain, enable secure cross-chain transactions and token movement, and leverage minting policies to support the sidechain’s token. 

2. A chain follower. The chain follower tracks the main-chain data and events that govern the sidechain. In the v1 toolkit release, this is a Cardano db-sync instance.

3. The sidechain module. This module is part of the sidechain client. It interprets main-chain data and implements the necessary ledger adaptations.
