### Self-custody is a key advantage provided by crypto. Because of recent events, we view self-custody (an individual's complete control and responsibility over an asset) as a necessity. Here is a basic method of taking self-custody of your crypto. 

For the uninitiated and first timers, we recommend Metamask and Trustwallet. These are both available on the mobile phone. Once you have mastered these methods, you may wish to learn how to use cold wallets. For now, learning how to take self-custody on app-based wallets is a good first step.

Basic principles for self-custody are: 

1. Be ready to keep your “seed phrase”. This is a set of twelve words in a specific order that the app will give to you when you create a wallet. You can create as many wallets as you want, but be careful to store your seed phrases somewhere they won’t get lost. 
2. Keep you seed phrase secret. Anyone with access to your seed phrase can control all the crypto in your wallet. 
3. If you lose your mobile phone, you don’t lose access to your crypto. All you will need to do is enter your seed phrase and you can restore your wallet into a new device. 
4. Metamask is an ethereum wallet, while Trust Wallet is a multi-coin wallet and can create Bitcoin, XRP, and other blockchain addresses for you). By default, a new wallet created on Metamask is an “ethereum wallet”. It’s important to know this because when crypto is sent to you, the sender will need to know what blockchain the wallet runs on. 
5. When you transact, you will need to pay gas fees. The gas fees are taken out of your wallet in the form of the network's native token such as ethereum (ETH). In that example, if there is no ETH in your wallet, you will not be able to transact. 
6. Being an ethereum wallet does not limit Metamask to storing ethereum. You can add any supported coin running on the Ethereum Virtual Machine, or other EVM compatible chains, but watch out for scams. 
7. As Metamask and Trust Wallet support other chains, you can create wallets that run on other chains like BNB Smart Chain or Polygon. These steps are a bit advanced and not needed. It is just useful to know as you get started. 
8. Blockchain transactions are not instant. They can take time. 
9. Blockchain transactions cannot be reversed. Always double check that you are sending to the right blockchain (ethereum, BNB smart chain, etc) and that you are sending a supported token. A token sent to the wrong chain can be lost forever. 


It’s all very confusing at first but it gets a lot easier very quickly as you get the hang of it. 


How to set up the self-custody wallet: 

1. Download the app 
2. Set-up your pin
3. Create your wallet and you will be given a seedphrase
4. Store your seedphrase, and confirm the creation of the wallet 


How to send crypto into the self-custody wallet: 

1. Open the app
2. Enter your pin
3. Select the token you want to receive
4. If the token you want to receive is not available, press ‘add token’ and add the token you want to receive; 5. Press receive and you will be shown your QR code or you can copy a text code; 
6. Provide your public address (QR code or text code) to the sender; 
7. If you are sending yourself crypto from an exchange, simply scan or upload the QR code, or paste in the text code when you are prompted. 

Remember: the transactions are not instant but once initiated, can be confirmed on the chain. 

If you are sending from an exchange, check for an option to see the status of the transaction. If it is your first time to send crypto, we suggest you send small amounts first to test how the transaction works and to make sure that you are able to successfully send the crypto to the intended destination (your wallet).
