### There is another scam gaining traction for those looking for a new way to earn through crypto. If you have seen or searched for a "front-running" bot video on YouTube, chances are you found the 'bait' into a new scam. 

Many scams are afoot in the cryptoverse and its hard to keep up. Certik is a well known crypto security company, and they have just warned about a scam involving 'front-running' bots that are peddled as a means for users to earn large profits. 

CertiK's [official site](https://www.certik.com/company/about) says this of the platform: "Certik was founded in 2018 by professors of Columbia and Yale, CertiK is a pioneer in blockchain security, utilizing best-in-class Formal Verification and AI technology to secure and monitor blockchains, smart contracts, and Web3 apps."  

In a December 1, 2022 report Certik flagged the proliferation of YouTube videos luring people towards a 'front-running' bot scam. Front-running is not a new activity and has been a profitable, albeit unethical and in most cases illegal way of skimming profits from markets with little risk of loss.

As the name implies, front-running is purchasing an asset that someone else is about to purchase and adding a little markup. The purchaser ends up paying a very slightly higher price that is usually unnoticeable. The front-running practice can yield a large profit if repeated through voluminous transactions over a lengthy period of time. 

When online stock trading was relatively knew, tech savy investors discovered that they could front run transactions if they had a faster connection to the market. Even milliseconds would give enough time for a computer bot to do a quick purchase and sale, and front run a large number of stock orders. 

For crypto, front running can be accomplished on the block-chain on requested but unapproved transactions. On-chain financial transactions are not approved according to a time-based queue. It isn't first come first served. The amount of gas fee chosen influences how quickly a transaction will be approved. 

In theory, a bot could be programmed to scan the pending transactions on a blockchain and, for a higher gas fee, "cut the line" and front-run the pending transactions that would be sizeable enough to yield a small profit on the quick purchase and sale. Most people will not have the time to analyze exactly how this process works but it is easy enough to understand that it is possible. 

The scam is accomplished by luring a potential 'investor' to connect their wallet to a dApp and insert certain 'front running bot' codes into it. Instead of front-running transactions, the bot drains your wallet. Certik concludes their report with the following advice for crypto users: 

"Never run any code that you don’t fully understand or trust. It only takes one line of code to convert a seemingly innocent contract into a malicious one. The golden rule of scamming applies here: if it seems too good to be true, it probably is. Be wary of any trading strategies or techniques that promise outsized returns, and don't execute any code unless you know exactly what you're doing. Your wallet will thank you."
