### It's called "address poisoning". Self-custody wallet provider Metamask has warned users of a new, clever scam that can affect 'lazy' users. 

Metamask sent a tweet about a clever new way scammers go after your crypto. You know how it's so easy to copy paste? It's one of those habits that pre-dates mobile usage and has not ever become a thing of the past. 

Crypto mobile wallet users love to use it for entering addresses because, well, quite simply, those addresses are way too long. 

Here's how the scam works. Let's say you sent crypto to a friend yesterday, and today you want to send some crypto again. You look up your transaction history and know that your last transaction was sending crypto to that same friend so you simply copy paste the address in the last transaction. 

Heck, you may even check the start and end of address to be sure that it is the right one. If your wallet was 'address poisoned', then you would have copy-pasted an address belonging to a scammer. 

How does this happen? Well, the scammers will use an address that looks similar, having the same start and end as your last transaction and using that similar address, send you a negligible amount of crypto. 

What happens is that the last transaction is theirs, and not actually yours. The scam can be averted by being more careful and checking the entire address or by simply not copy pasting from your transaction history. 

Copy-paste instead from a more secure source like the message thread with your friend.

After 2022's crazy year of crypto companies collapsing and users losing access to their crypto, self-custody is on the rise. However, it's still not easy to be 100% safe. More and more scams are being created to steal our crypto.
