### Etheruem has and still is the biggest smart contract blockchain. Will other blockchains like Cardano, Solana, Polkadot, Near, Algorand beat it in the future?

Blockchains are decentralized digital ledgers that allow for secure and transparent transactions. Ethereum, the second largest blockchain by market capitalization, has been a major player in the blockchain space since its launch in 2015. However, as the industry evolves, many are wondering if other blockchains will be able to surpass Ethereum.


One of the main challenges facing Ethereum is scalability.  This was something that was partly addressed in the merge last year with more EIPs to come that will bring in sharding and other upgrades.


Despite these efforts, there are other blockchains that are already surpassing Ethereum in terms of scalability. For example, the EOS blockchain can currently process around 3,996 transactions per second. Solana claims to have a throughput of 65,000 transactions per second, which is significantly faster than most other blockchain networks. Similarly, the TRON blockchain can process around 2,000 transactions per second. 

Other blockchains like Cardano aims to process transactions in around 5-20 seconds, which is faster than many other blockchain networks. While for Polkadot, the block times on Polkadot are around 6-12 seconds, depending on the specific relay chain.


Another challenge facing Ethereum is the increased competition in the smart contract platform space. Smart contracts are self-executing contracts with the terms of the agreement written directly into code. 

Ethereum is often considered the leader in this space, but other blockchains, such as Cardano, Near Protocol, EOS, TRON and the Binance Smartchain, are also offering similar smart contract capabilities. Additionally, newer blockchains such as Solana and Algorand have been specifically designed to facilitate high-speed and low-cost transactions, which could make them more attractive to developers and businesses looking to build decentralized applications.


Despite these challenges, Ethereum still has a number of advantages that could help it maintain its position as a leading blockchain. For one, it has a large and active community of developers and users, which has led to the creation of a wide range of decentralized applications (dapps) on the Ethereum network. Additionally, Ethereum's smart contract capabilities are considered to be more advanced than those of other blockchains, which could give it an edge in attracting developers and businesses looking to build dapps.


In conclusion, other blockchains are certainly emerging as strong competitors to Ethereum, particularly in terms of scalability. However, Ethereum's large and active community, as well as its advanced smart contract capabilities, could help it maintain its position as a leading blockchain. It will be interesting to see how the blockchain space develops in the coming years, and whether other blockchains will be able to surpass Ethereum.
