### Belgium's financial authorities are taking a tough stance on cryptocurrency advertising, mandating that all promotional materials include a warning that says: "The only guarantee in crypto is risk." This new regulation, which was introduced by the Financial Services and Markets Authority (FSMA), will go into effect on May 17th.

The FSMA has been given the authority to regulate the marketing of the crypto industry and is cracking down on companies that promise future returns. Instead, businesses will be required to disclose all relevant risks and conditions. The regulator is also requiring any mass media to inform them of ad campaigns at least ten days in advance.



The FSMA has warned that virtual currencies are highly risky and vulnerable to fraud and IT-related risks. The agency says that crypto's wild price fluctuations can lead to significant losses for investors, making it crucial for businesses to provide transparent and clear information to consumers.



The FSMA's move is aimed at protecting consumers from potential financial harm caused by misleading advertisements that promise unrealistic returns. While some may argue that such regulations are overly restrictive, the FSMA's decision is in line with many other financial regulators around the world who have taken similar steps to protect consumers.



Companies will need to ensure that their promotional materials are compliant with the new rules to avoid running afoul of the regulator. Higher transparency resulting from these regulations should be beneficial for all stakeholders in the long run.
