### While there is a growing consensus among many large financial institutions that Bitcoin should be considered a security, Goldman Sachs’ Jeff Curie classifies Bitcoin as a commodity due to its lack of liabilities unlike securities.

Bitcoin has been referred to as a commodity by Jeff Curie, managing director and head of commodities research at Goldman Sachs. This is due to the fact that, unlike securities, Bitcoin does not have any obligations linked to it.

Commodities are raw or primary materials that are produced and sold in large numbers and whose prices often fluctuate in response to supply and demand in the market, such as metals or agricultural products.



Commodities such as gold, silver, oil, wheat, corn, and coffee are all traded in commodity markets and are considered commodities because they are standardized and interchangeable with other goods of the same type. The quality and price of these goods are subject to market conditions, which can cause prices to fluctuate.



The absence of liabilities means that the value of Bitcoin is determined primarily by market supply and demand, similar to other commodities like gold or oil. This classification as a commodity is different from that of securities, which are financial instruments that have a claim on assets or profits and typically generate income for the owner through dividends or interest payments.



Jeff Curie has also compared Bitcoin to gold, stating that the two assets share many similarities. Like gold, Bitcoin is finite in supply and its price is influenced by market demand, which makes it attractive to investors as a store of value. Additionally, both gold and Bitcoin are considered to be hedge assets that can potentially protect against market volatility and inflation. However, Bitcoin is relatively new and still a highly volatile asset, and its long-term market performance and investment potential remain uncertain.
