### The Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) applies pressure on banks to accept crypto exchanges as clients. Major financial institutions such as HSBC, Standard Chartered, and Bank of China are among those urged to establish relationships with crypto platforms, despite regulatory crackdowns occurring elsewhere.

In a recent meeting, the HKMA questioned these banks regarding their hesitancy to engage with crypto exchanges, citing concerns over potential illicit activities like money laundering. While Hong Kong banks have not banned clients involved in cryptocurrencies, senior executives at traditional banks have expressed resistance, reflecting a conventional banking mindset.



However, Hong Kong's pro-business government has displayed enthusiasm for the crypto industry, recognizing its potential benefits and actively seeking to establish the city as a hub for the sector. In April, the HKMA issued a letter advising banks not to impose excessive burdens on potential clients during the due diligence process, particularly for those eyeing regional opportunities in Hong Kong.



Despite recent regulatory actions taken by bodies like the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) against major players like Binance and Coinbase, Hong Kong remains favorable towards crypto. The city has implemented a new licensing system for cryptocurrency platforms, aiming to attract more companies and demonstrate its commitment to embracing the sector.


As Hong Kong presses its banks to accept crypto exchanges as clients, the pressure faced by traditional financial institutions highlights the challenges encountered in establishing the city as a prominent player in the global crypto industry. Overcoming these obstacles will be crucial for Hong Kong's aspirations to solidify its position as a leading hub for the rapidly evolving cryptocurrency landscape.
