### Feeling pumped about a new altcoin? Shopping for altcoins that are cheaper now? Here’s a hack to know how easily the coin can be dumped by whales. 

Looking at past charts of the top altcoins, we can’t help but wish that we picked some ETH when it once upon a time dropped to USD80. With many altcoins dropping in price now, what can one do to understand the risk? 

It's common knowledge that tokenomics, utility and potential adoption are very important. Knowing things like how many tokens are being added to the market every day helps understand supply. Knowing whether the project has utility and good prospects for adoption help us understand demand. 

But, even knowing the present and potential future state of supply and demand leaves us vulnerable to price manipulation. If a token has a few holders with very large bags, those holders can, at anytime, drop the price. Note though, that we aren’t saying that tokens with high concentrations should be completely avoided, we are just pointing out that it’s important to be aware of those levels of concentrations in few holders. 

Here’s how you can obtain data on token concentration/distribution. This website coincarp.com has something called the “Rich List.” It’s a wonderful treasure trove of data to help you assess the risk of whales waiting to dump the coin you are looking into. 

For instance, if one is interested in ADA, you simply head to coincarp.com, and look up ADA and click ‘Rich List’:

Now, this hack isn’t full proof. Any on-chain analysis has its limits. For instance, theoretically, a whale can make it difficult for people to easily see how much of the token he holds by splitting the token up into different wallets. 

Also, tokens held by exchanges are not necessarily controlled by the exchange but by the many users that own the token. So some large wallets are actually an aggregation of different individuals. 

However, the data provided by coincarp’s Rich List gives a useful additional perspective that should be in everyone's ‘toolbox’ for evaluating tokens.
