### On June 6th, the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) took legal action against cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase, just one day after suing another major player in the industry, Binance. This move signifies an intensified crackdown on the crypto sector, as the SEC accuses Coinbase, the largest cryptocurrency exchange in the United States, of operating unlawfully without proper registration.

The SEC alleges that Coinbase has acted as an intermediary for billions of dollars worth of cryptocurrency transactions, while evading transparency laws meant to protect investors. This lawsuit comes after Coinbase received a Wells Notice from the SEC on March 22, 2023, indicating the agency's intention to recommend enforcement action against the company.



Following the announcement of the lawsuit, Coinbase experienced a significant blow, with its shares plummeting by 17% during premarket trading. 



Coinbase's CEO, Brian Armstrong, took to Twitter to challenge the SEC's claims. He highlighted that the SEC had previously evaluated and approved Coinbase's application to become a publicly traded company in 2021, countering the notion that the company had operated without any form of supervision.
