### If you had staked ETH to support what was initially called "ETH 2.0," you still can't withdraw the staked ETH until the next update dubbed "Shanghai Update." The certainty of being able to withdraw that staked ETH has become questionable.

It seems that the Shanghai update is on track and will be ready to launch in March 2023. However, the core developers of ETH are divided on how to handle $2.5B in staked ETH. 

It appears that there were some developers who were worried that the update may be moving a little too quickly but the consensus was to proceed anyway. 

Decrypt reported that "Zoltu and a few of the network's other 30-odd core developers are worried that a recent decision to forego a technical adjustment to Shanghai will expose Ethereum to unnecessary technical debt, with unknown implications for the years and decades ahead." 

Any delay would actually have only been for a few weeks but the core developers wanted to avoid having to keep the public waiting any longer. 

Those favoring the delay believe that there could be unforeseen consequences "unknown unknowns" because future ethereum withdrawals are meant to be compatible with 'simple serialize' or SSZ. 

However, as the Shangai update is meant to launch on-time, the withdrawals will not yet be compatible with SSZ. When ethereum eventually shifts to SSZ in the update after Shanghai, dubbed Cancun, there will be come withdrawals made with the "old" method that are incompatible with the "new" SSZ method. 

There is speculation that the mismatch in the "old" and "new" methods could have unforeseen consequences.
